# Technical Postmortem: Overcoming Limitations in VS Code Syntax Highlight

Our team encountered challenges while creating a custom VS Code theme when attempting to modify syntax highlighting colors for specific Python constructs (e.g., method calls like `classInstance.compute()`). The primary pain point was identifying the correct TextMate scopes due to ambiguous naming conventions, language-specific scope variations, and insufficient tooling for scope visualization.



## Root 

- Opaque TextMate scope naming: Scopes like `"string.quoted.docstring.multi"` are abstract and loosely mapped to UI 

- Multi-level scope inheritance: VS Code applies cascading scopes where parent scopes (e.g., `variable`) override child-specific scopes (e.g., `method.call`)

- Absence of transparent scope debugging: VS Code lacks built-in tools to visually associate editor tokens with their governing 

- Language-specific scope hierarchies: Python scopes diverge from generic TextMate patterns (e.g., unique Docstring scopes)



## Why This Happens in Real 

- Syntax highlighting relies on layered tokenization rules with implicit 

- Theme flexibility necessitates complex scope naming conventions that become technical 

- Debugging visuals are de-prioritized in favor of core editor 

- Extension points for deep introspection remain undocumented or

- Increased theme development time by 200–300% due to trial-and-error 

- Regression risk when modifying themes: changing one scope inadvertently affects unrelated 

- Frustration from inconsistent highlighting (e.g., method calls appearing identical to variables)

In Python, `.compute()` inherits from `variable` rather than `method` visually because:

1. The Python grammar assigns it `meta.function-call.python`
